Imagine a school bus… but powered by pedals! A bike bus is a group of kids and adults riding together on bikes, e-bikes, or scooters—following a planned route, at a set time, all heading to the same destination.
It’s fun. It’s social. And it’s a safe, healthy way to get to school—without the carpool line!
The Brookhaven Bike Alliance is teaming up with parents and community volunteers to launch bike buses for schools in Brookhaven and Chamblee — starting with Ashford Park and Montgomery Elementary.
Please complete this form if you’re interested in participating this school year, have suggestions for routes or logistics, or would like to help plan or lead a Bike Bus.
A bike bus creates a safe, manageable route of transportation for kids and families to build community and promote alternative modes of transportation to school.
Any student or caregiver from participating schools can join! We encourage elementary and middle school students to ride with a parent or guardian, especially on their first few rides.
Bikes, e-bikes, scooters (non-motorized or low-speed), and other non-car options are welcome—as long as they’re safe, everyone wears a helmet, and the rider can keep pace with the group.
Yes—with the right precautions. Routes are chosen for lower traffic and safer conditions, and adult volunteers help manage crossings and pace. Helmets are required for all riders, including adults.
You can meet the bike bus at a designated stop or start point that’s convenient for you. Many families drive to a meeting point and park nearby if needed.
This depends on the school and volunteer availability. Some run weekly, others monthly, and some only for special events. We’re aiming to grow frequency as interest and support build.
The bike bus won’t run in dangerous weather (e.g., heavy rain, lightning, snow). Participants will be notified via their bike bus WhatsApp group.
Nope! Join when you can. We welcome regulars and one-time riders alike. Even one ride helps reduce traffic and builds community.
This depends on the rider! Some park their bike at the school and bike home after, others have a parent pick up the bike and take a bus or carpool home.
